Behind the Sound: The Story of STEREO
When prominent musicians step away from their massive, stadium-filling main acts to explore fresh creative territory, the results are often unpredictable, bold, and entirely refreshing. In the Finnish music scene, this exact phenomenon gave birth to STEREO (stylized as STEREO), an electronic dance music (EDM) and pop duo formed by two masterminds behind one of Finland’s biggest rock bands, Haloo Helsinki!
The Origins: From Stadium Rock to Electronic Beats
STEREO was brought to life by Jere Marttila and Leo Hakanen, both widely celebrated as the primary guitarists and songwriters of Haloo Helsinki!. When Haloo Helsinki! announced an indefinite hiatus to take a well-deserved break from their relentless touring schedule, Marttila and Hakanen didn’t stop making music. Instead, they pivoted sharply.
Trading their signature electric guitars for synthesizers, drum machines, and electronic production software, they formed STEREO as an experimental playground. The project allowed them to explore a sleek, club-ready electronic soundscape that contrasted heavily with their organic rock roots, while still retaining their innate knack for massive, infectious pop hooks.
The Breakthrough and the Self-Titled Era
In 2019, STEREO dropped their debut studio album simply titled 00740, named after a Helsinki postal code, which immediately signaled a deeply local yet globally minded electronic aesthetic.
Rather than working in isolation, Marttila and Hakanen invited a star-studded lineup of Finnish artists and vocalists to collaborate on the project. This gave the duo’s electronic compositions a dynamic, ever-shifting vocal identity. Some of their most notable tracks from this era include:
- “Woo Woo” – Featuring legendary Hanoi Rocks frontman Michael Monroe, blending rock attitude with heavy electronic basslines.
- “Bonnie & Clyde” – A sleek pop collaboration featuring Ida Paul and Kalle Lindroth.
- “Sä saat mut palasiksi” – A massive streaming hit featuring pop-rock icon Samu Haber.
- “Marijuana” – Produced alongside the rap group Teflon Brothers.
Why STEREO Matters
While STEREO initially functioned primarily as a side project for a specific window of time during Haloo Helsinki!’s hiatus (2018–2019), it stands as a testament to artistic versatility. Marttila and Hakanen proved that great songwriters are not confined to a single genre. By diving headfirst into EDM, synth-pop, and modern urban production, they expanded the boundaries of contemporary Finnish pop music, delivering high-energy tracks that continue to resonate in playlists and clubs alike.
