How to Get Your Telegram API Key: Step-by-Step Guide

When developers or platform users search for a “Telegram API key,” they are often looking for a way to connect custom software, automation tools, or third-party apps to Telegram.

However, unlike many other platforms that rely on a single string labeled “API Key,” Telegram uses two distinct authentication systems depending on what you are trying to build: User/Client API credentials (api_id and api_hash) or a Bot API Token.

1. The Two Faces of Telegram Integration

Before diving into how to obtain your credentials, it is crucial to understand which system fits your use case:

  • Client API (MTProto): Used if you want to build a custom Telegram client, perform user-account automation, or build software that acts on behalf of a user profile. This requires an api_id and an api_hash.
  • Bot API: Used if you want to create an automated account that responds to messages, manages channels, or integrates customer service tools. This uses a Bot Token issued by Telegram’s official administrator bot.

2. How to Get User API Credentials (api_id and api_hash)

If a third-party application or a custom script asks for your Telegram API key, it is almost certainly asking for your MTProto development credentials.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Log in to the Telegram Core Website: Navigate to the official my.telegram.org portal.
  2. Enter Your Phone Number: Input the international phone number associated with your Telegram account and submit.
  3. Retrieve the Confirmation Code: Telegram will send a login code via the official Telegram app (not via SMS). Enter this code on the website.
  4. Access API Development Tools: Once logged in, click on API development tools.
  5. Create a New Application:
    • Fill out the form with an App title and Short name (these can be anything you like).
    • You can leave the URL and description blank and select Desktop for the platform.
    • Click Create application.
  6. Save Your Credentials: You will instantly receive two vital pieces of data:
    • api_id (a string of numbers)
    • api_hash (a alphanumeric security hash)

⚠️ Security Warning: Treat your api_hash like a password. Anyone who has both your api_id and api_hash can control your Telegram account programmatically. Telegram permits only one api_id set per phone number.

3. How to Get a Bot API Token (Alternative Method)

If you are trying to hook up a chatbot, notification system, or widget, you do not need a developer account at my.telegram.org. Instead, you talk directly to Telegram’s master bot, BotFather.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Open your Telegram app and search for @BotFather (look for the official blue verification checkmark).
  2. Start a chat and send the command /newbot.
  3. Follow BotFather’s prompts to choose a display name and a unique username for your bot (the username must end in bot, such as my_support_bot).
  4. BotFather will instantly generate and display your HTTP API Token (
