Building a scale model of the legendary Boeing 747—affectionately known as the “Queen of the Skies”—is one of the most rewarding DIY cardboard projects you can take on. With its distinctive hump on the upper deck and iconic four-engine silhouette, the 747 revolutionized commercial aviation, and capturing its massive proportions in miniature is a fantastic engineering challenge.
Materials & Tools
Before you start cutting, gather everything you need to ensure a sturdy, clean build:
- Cardboard: A mix of sturdy corrugated cardboard (for internal structural ribs and the fuselage spine) and thin chipboard or cereal-box cardboard (for smooth outer skin and curved surfaces).
- Tools: Craft knife or utility knife, a self-healing cutting mat, a metal ruler, a hot glue gun with plenty of glue sticks, and white PVA glue.
- Reinforcement: Wooden barbecue skewers or thin wooden dowels to strengthen the wings and fuselage.
- Finishing Touches: Fine sandpaper, masking tape, white primer, acrylic paints (white, silver, and accent colors for your chosen airline livery), and a black permanent marker.
