Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS Officer? Decoding the Journey of India’s Renowned Educator
When people think of the grueling Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams in India, one name that frequently lights up internet screens, lecture halls, and YouTube recommendations is Dr. Vikas Divyakirti. Known for his profound lectures, sharp intellect, and empathetic mentorship, he is a household name for millions of civil service aspirants.
A common question that often pops up among students and admirers is: Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer?
The short answer is no, he is not currently an IAS officer, nor did he serve as one. However, his connection to the civil services runs deep. Here is the real story behind his background, his brief stint in the government, and how he became one of India’s most celebrated educators.
The UPSC Triumph: Cracking the Exam
Dr. Vikas Divyakirti’s relationship with the civil services examination is a matter of historic record. In 1996, at the young age of 23, he appeared for the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Examination and cleared it on his very first attempt, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.
Passing this notoriously difficult exam is a feat achieved by very few, instantly marking him out as an academic high-achiever.
From Government Service to the Classroom
Rather than becoming an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, his rank placed him in the Central Secretariat Service (CSS) of the Government of India. He was appointed as a Section Officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.
However, the bureaucratic corridors weren’t where his true passion lay. Realizing that his heart belonged to teaching, literature, and interacting with young minds, he made the bold and unconventional choice to resign from government service after serving for just a few months.
The Birth of Drishti IAS
Opting out of a secure, prestigious government career, Dr. Divyakirti returned to his true calling: education. In 1999, he founded Drishti IAS—a coaching and mentoring institute in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi, designed to guide aspirants through India’s toughest exam.
