Before the Spotlight: The Quiet, Formative Years of Song Kang

Long before he earned the moniker “Son of Netflix” or captivated millions across the globe in smash-hit K-dramas like Sweet Home and Nevertheless, Song Kang was just a regular young guy trying to figure out where he belonged.

While his striking features and towering height now make it seem like he was genetically engineered for the screen, Song Kang’s pre-debut era was defined by quiet introspection, unexpected artistic influences, and a deliberate rejection of a totally different career path.

A Household Rooted in Art and Athletics

Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song Kang grew up in an environment where physical discipline and creative expression naturally intersected. Athleticism ran deep in his family lineage—his father was a former competitive artistic gymnast. However, despite growing up around sports, a young Song Kang quickly realized that competitive gymnastics wasn’t his destiny.

Instead, creativity entered his daily life through his mother, who worked as a piano teacher. Under her guidance, Song Kang was introduced to the keyboard at an early age, spending considerable time practicing and even taking home awards from local piano competitions. Though he would later joke about learning it somewhat “forcefully” as a kid—leading to a temporary hiatus—that early musical training quietly laid the foundation for the talents he would later showcase on screen and during fan meetings.

Turning Down the K-Pop Track

As Song Kang transitioned into young adulthood, his standout visuals and natural charisma inevitably caught the attention of the entertainment industry.

Before he ever stepped onto a professional acting set, he received multiple casting offers from prominent K-pop idol management agencies. With South Korea’s massive idol trainee system booming, many scouts saw him as prime material for a boy group debut.

However, Song Kang politely turned them all down. He realized early on that his heart didn’t belong on a music stage performing choreography under bright stage lights; rather, he was drawn to the emotional gravity, psychological depth, and storytelling power of cinema. This clarity redirected his focus toward formal training, leading him to enroll in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University—the prestigious alma mater of several other top Korean actors.

The Final Step Before the Curtain Rises

During his university years, Song Kang buckled down to master the theoretical and practical mechanics of acting. Rather than rushing into the industry, he spent his time studying film, refining his expressions, and building the internal resilience needed for a competitive field.

His journey officially shifted from preparation to reality in late 2016 when he signed with his current agency, Namoo Actors. Just a few months later, in March 2017, he stepped in front of the camera for his professional acting debut in the tvN romantic-comedy series The Liar and His Lover, playing the cheerful supporting role of Baek Jin-woo.
